Connect Cursor

Cursor connects to khive over HTTP with an API key. Its MCP configuration file names an environment variable, and Cursor reads the key from it.

You need a khive account with a plan and an API key (see Quickstart, step 1). These steps were tested with the Cursor CLI, cursor-agent 2026.10.14. The Cursor editor reads its MCP servers from the same files.

Cursor's own sign-in for MCP servers needs dynamic client registration, which khive does not offer, so Cursor connects with an API key.

1. Put your API key in your environment

export KHIVE_API_KEY="<your API key>"

Add the line to your shell profile (for example ~/.zshrc), so every terminal you start Cursor from has the key.

2. Add khive to mcp.json

To use khive in all your projects, put this in ~/.cursor/mcp.json. To use it in one project, put it in .cursor/mcp.json at the project's root.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "khive": {
      "url": "https://khive.ai/v1/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "ApiKey ${env:KHIVE_API_KEY}"
      }
    }
  }
}

Cursor replaces ${env:KHIVE_API_KEY} with the key when it loads the server, so the file holds only the variable's name. Right after you create a key, the API Keys page in the dashboard shows this file with the key written into it. That version also works, but it stores the key itself in the file.

3. Approve the server and check the connection

Cursor loads a new MCP server only after you approve it. In the CLI:

cursor-agent mcp enable khive
cursor-agent mcp list

khive should be listed as ready:

khive: ready

To see the tools it offers:

cursor-agent mcp list-tools khive
Tools for khive (22):
- add_task (assignee, context_entity_id, depends_on, due, priority, tags, timezone, title)
...

If cursor-agent mcp list shows khive: Error: Connection failed, the key is wrong, or KHIVE_API_KEY is not set in that terminal. Open a new terminal after editing your profile, or run the export line again.

4. See your usage

Calls from Cursor count against your plan like calls from any other client. https://khive.ai/dashboard/usage shows Requests this month, Usage (month to date) and Top verbs.

Remove khive

cursor-agent mcp disable khive

This stops Cursor from loading khive. To remove it for good, delete the khive entry from the mcp.json you added it to. Neither step ends the key. To do that, open https://khive.ai/dashboard/keys, click Revoke next to the key and then Confirm revoke. Calls made with a revoked key are refused.
